    Today's groundbreaking ceremony marked the official start of construction on the expansion of the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM in Kaiserslautern. The federal and state governments are investing around € 31 million in this construction project, which will add two new wings to the building.

    Our employee Dr. Petra Gospodnetić has been working in the »Image Processing« department at the Fraunhofer ITWM since an internship during her studies. Now she is being supported by AHEAD – the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft's technology transfer program – in founding a start-up. She successfully completed the first phase of the program and even got a prize with her team.

    Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM are using innovative technologies to focus on battery behavior during charging and discharging, the optimization of battery production and the aging of batteries. They use modern simulation tools and innovative measurement techniques to drive forward the further development of battery cells for electric cars. They will be presenting their research results at the Battery Show Europe 2025 from June 3 to 5.

    Over the past three decades, Machine Learning has permeated the optimization of production processes, material and machine design and can now be found everywhere in industrial practice. It is therefore important for industry professionals to develop a basic understanding of it. Prof. Dr. Anita Schöbel, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM, together with Prof. Dr. Jürgen Franke from the Universitiy of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU), has published the book »Statistical Machine Learning for Engineering with Applications«, which provides an accessible introduction to the concepts and methods of Machine Learning.

    Dynamic Electricity Prices and Flexibility Marketing for the Floating Energy Community Schoonschip

    The Dutch energy community »Schoonschip« with 30 floating houses north of Amsterdam, which is integrated into the energy markets by an intelligent management system of the Fraunhofer ITWM. Innovative technologies optimize electricity consumption and the production of PV systems, battery storage and heat pumps, enabling the community to function as a flexible virtual power plant.

    News from the Dutch Schoonschip: Since January, the floating energy community of 30 houses has been connected to the energy and flexibility markets. The innovative solution from the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM for the real-time prognosis of consumption and local generation and price optimization enables the community to buy and sell electricity at the best possible prices on the day-ahead energy market. In addition, the 30 batteries are marketed by a trader on the imbalance market. This allows the community to further increase its flexibility and reduces energy costs for its members.

    The Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM is extending its terahertz expertise to the mid-infrared range. Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena, it is investigating nonlinear crystals for the optical frequency conversion of ultrashort laser pulses from the near to the mid-infrared range. The work is being funded by the Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Advanced Photon Sources CAPS with a total of 250,000 euros at both institutes.

    The perfect foam is not only important for drinks such as beer and coffee or for the airy consistency of chocolate mousse at Christmas dinner. Foam is also used for insulation in cooling devices or batteries as well as in seat cushions, prostheses or shoe soles. From December 3 to 5, 2024, the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM will be presenting its contributions to the future of foam production for lightweight construction at Foam Expo Europe 2024 in Stuttgart.

    Pioneering Technologies for High Performance Computing and Artificial Intelligence

    The Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM will be presenting innovative solutions for parallel programming and Artificial Intelligence at Supercomputing 2024 in Atlanta, USA, from November 18 to 22. Two Fraunhofer spin-offs will participate at the joint booth 3115 in Hall B: ThinkparQ will present its roadmap for the parallel file system BeeGFS. The spin-off UNEEC Systems will be demonstrating the STX processor and its system approach to energy efficient and cost effective compute infrastructure. The STX processor accelerates HPC simulations while keeping programming simple. Researchers from the division »High Performance Computing« will share new developments in parallel programming and other AI solutions for High Performance Computing.
